5 Signs You’re Hiring the Right HVAC Professional for Your Portland Home

Heating

  • My furnace is not heating.

Turn off the furnace at your breaker panel leave it off for about 30 seconds. Turn the breaker back on. It could take about 2 minutes for your furnace to re fire.

Check and make sure the doors to the furnace are on properly.

  • My furnace shuts off before my home reaches the thermostat setting.

This normally caused by restricted air flow. Check the furnace filters and make sure they are clean. Make sure your filters don't have a high Merv rating. A Merv rating from 8 to 10 is best. Check for any closed or blocked vents.

  • My upstairs is hotter than my downstairs.

Most thermostats are located on the main floor. Heat rises and the thermostat shuts off once it reaches temperature at its location. Things to try would be to turn your fan to on. This will help pull some of the hot air from upstairs and circulate it through out the home. Some homes are equipped with a manual damper that is normally on the left or right side of the furnace. Adjust this to decrease the amount of air to the upstairs.

AC

  • I see ice or frost on my AC.

This is typically has a few different causes.

Check your furnace filter. Ensure that it is clean. That it doesn't have a high Merv rating above 10.

    Check for any closed vents.

Make sure the thermostat isn't set below 68 degrees.

  • My home isn't cooling and air is coming out my vents.

Go outside and see if the fan is turning and you hear a faint sound that sounds like a air compressor. If neither of these are present. Turn off your breaker marked AC at the breaker panel. Turn it back on if it still doesn't come on call us.

  • My upstairs is hotter than the downstairs.

Close any blinds upstairs. This will reduce the temperature.

Once the full time cooling season arrives set your thermostat at the desired setting above 68 degrees and leave it until fall arrives.

Make sure there are no vents close to your thermostat. If there is, close that vent.

Turn the fan to on at the thermostat. This will bring the hot air from upstairs and circulate it to turn on the thermostat sooner. Providing cool air to the upstairs earlier in the day.

  • What size furnace or AC do I need for my home.

While most feel bigger is better. This is not true for many reasons.

Oversized HVAC equipment is not a good thing.

Oversized Furnaces will heat your home quickly but only run for short intervals. Resulting in large temperature swings between the off and run cycles. In most cases the ductwork for homes is undersized. Pairing these 2 will result in the furnace overheating and interrupting heating cycles and shorting the life of the furnace.

An Oversized AC while it may be able to cool your home at 120 degrees. That is not realistic. Most of our cooling load hours in Oregon are around 80 to 85 degrees. An Oversized AC will result in short run cycles which will cause high humidity in your home. Temperature swings and shortened equipment life.
